What's Fresh 11/5/07: American Gangster

It is hard to make a gangster movie that will ever compare with the Godfathers, Scarface, and Goodfellas caliber movies. These are iconic and classic movies that tell a tale of excess and greed, and money and family in timeless ways.

However, Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Josh Brolin,Cuba Gooding Jr. and a host of other fantastic actors have come together and produced a movie that can compete with these classic films, and is sure to become a classic in its own right!

It is dramatic, featuring the typical good vs. evil dichotomy. It is human, showing a range and complexity of characters unlike many movies of today. It is also a real story, which makes it, in many ways, harder to portray. Denzel's no-nonsense, and almost serene gangstar portrayal is juxtaposed against Russell Crowe's complex and chaotic life as a police officer. Denzel, like he has done in many movies before, becomes Frank Lucas. He talks and walks like a man in charge of the biggest drug ring in the burroughs of New York. Likewise, Crowe brings a grittiness and substance to his character that makes him much more human and realistic than your run of the mill police character.

The movie is a MUST see...and you will surely love it...and actually go the your local movie store and buy this, don't buy it from the bootlegger at the hair salon for $5. Support the arts and creativity in ways that maximize the profits of the people who work hard to entertain you!
